Health insurance moving checklist

Seven blocks of questions for moving abroad. Tick off what you have settled. What stays open is your talking material for your health fund, insurer or adviser.

1. Your situation

• Where are you moving, from when, and for how long? Is the end date fixed or open?
• Who is coming with you: alone, as a couple, with children?
• How will you work there: employed, seconded by your employer, self-employed or not at all?
• Where are you insured today, statutory or private, and since when?
• When and how do you want to return, or do you not know yet?

2. Check your current cover (ideally ask in writing)

• What happens to your insurance when you move your residence abroad?
• By when do you have to notify them, and what proof do you need?
• What applies to co-insured family members?
• Can your contract be suspended or continued, and on what terms?
• What applies if you come back later?

3. Type of new cover

• Do you need cover for a trip, for a longer stay abroad or for living in the destination country?
• Which countries should it cover, and does it also apply to visits back home?
• What happens if you move on to another country?

4. Lay offers side by side

• Which treatments are included: outpatient, inpatient, dental, preventive care?
• Are there waiting periods, and for which benefits?
• How high is the deductible, and does it apply per year or per treatment?
• How does billing work: direct billing, or paying first yourself?
• Whom do you call in an emergency, and is help available around the clock?
• How long does the contract run, and how can you end it?
• What do the terms say about pre-existing conditions?

5. Application

• Have you read the application questions carefully and answered them fully and honestly?
• Do you have a written acceptance stating the start of cover?
• Are the application, acceptance and terms filed away?

6. Family

• Does every person travelling with you have their own answer to the questions from blocks 2 to 5?
• Is it clear from when children or partner are insured, and where?

7. Cancellation and deregistration

• Does the new cover start before the old one ends, and is both in writing?
• Is it clear on which date you have to cancel or deregister?
• Have you filed the confirmation of cancellation or deregistration?
• Do you register your departure only after all of this is settled?

After arrival

• Are your documents at hand digitally and on paper, and do you know whom to call in an emergency?
