The profile in five questions
- Who goes where, and in which role?
- For how long, with which start and which possible extension?
- Will a partner or children come along?
- Who should be the policyholder: the company or the seconded person?
- Who decides internally, and who is the contact during the assignment?
Role, not name
For the profile, role and general data are enough. Please do not send names, health information or personnel files.
Secondment or local employment?
This determines who the policyholder is and which costs the company bears.
Secondment
The person stays employed by you and works abroad for a defined period. For health insurance, what mainly counts is then: who organises the cover, and what applies to accompanying family members?
Local employment
The person is employed in the host country, for example at a subsidiary. Then local options and employees’ expectations come to the fore.
Which model applies legally, you clarify with your advisers for employment, tax and social security law. For health insurance we only need the result.
Three phases of an assignment
Before departure
Proof for visa or work permit, transition from previous cover, information for the seconded person.
During the assignment
Contact in case of a claim, travel to third countries, home leave, changes in the family.
Extension, onward move or return
What happens if the assignment lasts longer, leads to another country or ends, and who takes care of it?
We do not answer product, tax, employment and residence questions in a blanket way on a web page. Each secondment is looked at individually. You will find the wider framework under Global Mobility.
What HR can clarify internally in advance
The clearer these points are before the first call, the faster the profile becomes a reliable plan.
- Is there already a secondment policy, and what does it say about health insurance?
- Who bears which costs, and how are they charged internally?
- Who answers queries from the seconded person during the assignment?
- How and when do you inform the person before departure?

Frequently asked questions
Does one standard apply to every secondment?
No. Each combination of persons, countries and period is looked at individually.
Can we come with several secondments at the same time?
Yes. Then we start with an overview by countries and periods instead of individual cases.
What about family members?
Whether and how partners and children are included belongs in the profile from the start. The answer depends on country, model and contract.
This page provides orientation and does not replace individual advice. The law, your contract terms and the competent authorities are binding.
